Overwhelm- Get Over It!

Most of us notice we are overwhelmed well beyond the first symptoms: being on edge, snapping at the people around us, not having systems in place to handle the big to do list, not getting much done, turning to comfort foods, restless nights, etc. At that point you can reach a place of paralysis, not knowing what to do first. Get over it today! Use the tips below to shift from being the victim of overwhelm to taking control, taking action, and creating the life, career, and business you see for you and your family.

Scattered to Structured-
Create your plan. Get to do’s out of your head and into a system. Would you mow a lawn by wandering around the yard with the lawn mower? Create a clear, efficient track to be efficient and productive. Set it up to work for you: list everything, list just your next best steps, or break into groups (home, work, education, things I need to buy, etc.). If you really do not know what to do then begin your list with ‘gather more information’ (research, talk to others, take a class, etc). Set the structure, the action plan, to support success.

Prioritize- Know what is most important. We often cast aside the actions that would make the greatest long term positive impact due to some type of fear. Get over it! Put the important stuff at the start of the day so it is not a toleration draining your energy and looming over you. Take action to begin.

Systematize- Look for opportunities to save time.  Get the kids in a car pool. Pick up items when you will be on that side of town. Toss junk mail immediately. Keep a running list in your system for items you need to buy, errands that need to be run, etc. Check e-mail at certain times of the day. Automate to simplify. When overwhelmed look for systems to simplify.

Set Deadlines- When beginning a task decide how much time you will allow. Set deadlines for how long you will be on a phone call, social networking site, or e-mail? How long will you allow for this project? Setting deadlines and being time conscious leads to more efficient, productive work. It helps the regret of, ‘where did the day go?’ We only get one shot at each moment, a valuable asset to be cared for when you are choosing to take control.

Shift Perceptions and Beliefs- Overwhelm tends to put one in a place of feeling victimized, sorry for yourself, or paralyzed. Get to the source of what is really going on. What are you telling yourself? The key is to shift to taking responsibility, taking back your power, and taking action.

Microstep to Success- Begin with ridiculously tiny steps if that is what it takes. Do what you know you can do. I know I can: clean off this one pile on my desk, dial the number to this utility company to lower a bill, sit down to start this project, sit down with pen and paper in my comfortable chair to begin a plan, delete this many e-mails daily until my box is empty, etc. Microstepping will move the overwhelmed forward developing momentum and leading to ‘feel great’ moments.

Call in Help- We accomplish more together with support and accountability. Could you benefit from a cleaning person, personal assistant, life coach, professional organizer that works for you to reduce overwhelm? If tight on money, look for opportunities to trade services with friends and associates. Ask loved ones if they will block some time to help.

Begin now. Get overwhelm out of your head and into a productive system. Prioritize and take action. Look for ways to simplify and work efficiently. Set deadlines to place value on your time and not waste it. Shift thoughts to a place of power where you are capable of so much more than you know. Step forward and get help as needed. Get over overwhelm… Starting Now!

Pour Enthusiasm into All You Do- Get Unstuck with Lessons from a Vibrant Waterfall

“Take on today with a vibrant waterfall of enthusiasm pouring into everything you do. Unsure of what you will encounter leap into action and stay the course with zeal. Then peacefully settle into a sea of fulfillment at day’s end where your spirit rejuvenates.” Beth Tabak

Procrastination is excruciating!  While it is important to get to the source of procrastination and decide on a course of action we can make great strides by simply shifting to pour enthusiasm into everything we do. As Viktor Frankl stated:  Everything can be taken from a man but ...the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” Here we take a look at the zeal of a waterfall and what we can learn about making the choice to overcome procrastination with enthusiasm. As an extra treat visit the Behind the Waterfall video by Natural States by clicking the link at the end of the article.

Begin from a Place of Peace-
Every waterfall begins in a place of peacefulness. Start your day being in a place of peace, trust, and enthusiasm for the day. Dicky Fox in the Movie Jerry Maguire has the perfect attitude: “I love the mornings! I clap my hands every morning and say, 'This is gonna be a great day!'

Be Authentic-
Get to know and stay connected with who you are. Leverage your strengths, passions, knowledge, and values  When you do, things begin to flow. You experience less struggle and more ease. Water will attempt to be nothing less than what it is.

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Take Educated Risks to Leap into Action-
Overcoming procrastination means taking leaps of faith similar to a waterfall leaping away from the security of land and its path as it goes over the edge unaware. While a plan is key there comes a time to let go of fear and initiate enthusiasm. You may not know where you will land, who you will meet, or what you will encounter but you have what it takes to handle it, readjust, continue forward, and feel great about the progress.

“Act enthusiastic and you will be enthusiastic.” Dale Carnegie

Be Enthusiastic in Everything You Do-
Whether it be a handshake, answering the phone, working on a project, hugging your spouse, going on a walk or run, listening to the needs of a child or client, communicating with a co-worker, cleaning off your desk, playing a round of golf, or taking a rejuvenation break--- do it with enthusiasm! See the gift in each action.

“Life’s blows cannot break a person whose spirit is warmed at the fire of enthusiasm.” Norman Vincent Peale

Meet Obstacles, Readjust, and Continue Forward-
Know that you have the enthusiasm, resources, and everything it takes to overcome obstacles. Notice how waterfalls crash across boundaries and into obstructions. Due to its fluidity it is able to readjust direction to continue moving in a forward direction although it may now be on a new path. Avoid being rigid in procrastination. Be fluid by seeing the abundance of possibilities and choices; and believing in yourself.

“Enthusiasm releases the drive to carry you over obstacles and adds significance to all you do.” Norman Vincent Peale

Get Support-
An abundance of drops of water and numerous streams may come together to build the momentum of a waterfall. The more support you get the better able you are to build and maintain the momentum of enthusiasm.

End the Day in a Sea of Fulfillment and Rejuvenate-
When you have given every drop of enthusiasm there is to give you may feel drained and exhausted. But reflection on the actions of the day can soon be overcome with a sense of fulfillment. This fulfillment helps to rejuvenate the spirit (along with a good night’s sleep).

Enjoy the beauty of what was experienced in that one day. As the waterfall tumbles with enthusiasm it once again comes to a place of peace and fulfillment where it has accomplished what it has set out to do. Enjoy the beauty. Look into the Sea of Fulfillment and see the reflection of just how capable you are…. Starting Now!
